Death Valley was very active and living place in the beginning of the 20th century, in the period of gold rush. It drawn tens of thousands of people from around the world in the hopes of finding wealth. People settled and worked in the harsh environment of the desert with limited access to fresh water, food and supplies. Most settlements became ghost towns by the 1920s as the gold mining operations receded in this area.
